What will happen to the beans?

Problem Scenario

How does the acidity of water affect bean growth?

Will rubbing alcohol mixed with water make bean plants grow less or more?

Hypothesis:

I predict that the rubbing alcohol mixed with water will make the bean plants grow less. Due to chemicals, affecting the plan growth.

Variables

Independent Variable: The acidity of water

Dependent Variable: Plant growth

Variables That Need To Be Controlled: Time, Amount of liquid given, Amount of soil given.

Vocabulary List That Needs Explanation

General Plan

First I will plant two seeds in a flower pot with soil. Then I will water two pots with water and two with rubbing alcohol. I will take two observations a day. One in the morning and one at late afternoon/early night. I will repeat this process of watering and observing until the first week of March. I will be observing the growth of all four bean plants. I will keep track of how much liquid I give the plants also. I will record my observations in a notebook.

Potential Problems And Solutions:

1. The beans don't grow. Solution: Plant more bean plants. - include in procedure.

2. Not enough sunlight for plants. Solution: Use light bulb for light - include in procedure.
3. Try not to inhale rubbing alcohol to much because its dangerous......has negative side affects. - include in procedure.

Safety Or Environmental Concerns

One environmental concern that I have is if people who are making crops to not water their plants with rubbing alcohol.

Detailed Procedure

1. Get bean seeds and plant then in cup. 2. Water one with vinegar, one with water, another with vinegar, water another with water. 3. Let beans grow. 3. Take observations every day in the morning and at late afternoon/night. Continue this process until the first week in March. 4. After plants are done growing , take observation of how much the plants have growing since the begging. 5. Make a graph of observations.

Results

My results show that my rubbing alcohol plants were killed with the rubbing alcohol. Meaning that they did not grow at all. My plants that were given water grew. These results give me the information that giving plants rubbing alcohol will kill plants.

Conclusion

From my conclusion I concluded that rubbing alcohol kills plants. To prove this I observed that my alcohol plants have not grown, compared to my other plants that have been given water.

Discussion

My data showed that rubbing alcohol did in fact kill the two plants they were in. This shows to never give plants rubbing alcohol, or they will die. I was able to answer my experiment question. I did come upon some problems related to my plants. In the begging of my experiment my plants
A way that in the future that this experiment could be improved is instead of giving plants an other type of liquid besides water, give the plants multiple types of liquids that have chemicals in it.

Benefit to Community and/or Science

A benefit to community and/ or science is letting people know to not water crops or plants with rubbing alcohol.

Background Research

The beans should grow in one to two weeks.
From doing research I learned that just a small amount of rubbing alcohol inserted in a plant will eventually dry the plant. The alcohol in about a week will start to dry out the inside of the plant. Even after the plant dries out if you give the plant water it will still die. I recommend not giving your plants alcohol because if you plant crops with the bean seed and give them alcohol it will kill the crop.

Abstract,

My experiment was overall a success. My question was does the acidity of water affect bean growth. I had to restart my project because none of my plant were growing. So I restarted my project and it was a success. My hypothesis turned out to be correct. I thought that the rubbing alcohol would kill the plants, and the plants that had water would grow. It took about a week for the plants to start growing, but at least this experiment gave me a conclusion. The conclusion that it gave me was if your planning to have successful plant growth, DO NOT give your plants rubbing alcohol.
